HISTORY OF CP

Cultivating Place: Conversations on Natural History and the Human Impulse to Garden, airs on North State Public Radio (KCHO/KFPR, mynspr.org) every Thursday at 10 am and again at 10 am every Sunday.

The podcast is distributed nationally by PRX, Public Radio Exchange, as well as syndicated on stations around California: KWMR in Marin, KHSU in Humboldt, KVMR in Grass Valley, and on WVXU Cincinnati Public Radio, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

CP has its roots in a smaller more locally focused program, In a North State Garden, which aired on North State Public Radio every weekend from 2008 - 2016. In 2016, that program grew up into Cultivating Place, with Jennifer Jewell as the sole host and Matt Fidler as the technical producer and sole engineer.

Between 2016 and 2024, Jewell aired an episode of CP every week, added three stations around the country to the CP community, wrote three books and traveled the country (physically and virtually) preaching the gospel of Cultivating Place.

In 2023 and 2024, with the generous support of partnering organizations such as the American Horticultural Society, Timber Press, The Garden Conservancy, Ground Studio, and the Catto-Shaw Foundation, CP was able to add our first administrative support staff to the CP team, and then in 2024 two additional guest hosts, Abra Lee in Atlanta, GA and Ben Futa in South Bend, Indiana, whose own places and perspectives live out the mission of CP to elevate and expand the way we think and talk about gardening in very real time.

In 2025, Cultivating Place is growing up again. Heading into our 10th year of producing the the CP radio program and podcast, one year into the production and development of CP Live, the curated series of Gardener-supporting interviews recorded & filmed live in front of an audience - we are proudly and robustly now an IRS and State of CA-recognized non-profit entity for the public good: The Cultivating Place Foundation

Cultivating Place and Jennifer Jewell were winners of the 2017 Gold Award for Best Overall Broadcast Media, and Best On-Air Talent from the Garden Writers of America (now GardenComm), and the 2018 Best On-Air Talent from the same. The podcast is downloaded around the world more than 1 million times annually.

Cultivating Place has several times been recognized by Garden Communicators International as Best On-Air Talent and Best Overall Broadcast Media.

In 2023,  the American Horticultural Society honored Jewell with one of their annual  "Great American Gardener Awards"—the B. Y Morrison Award for outstanding “effective and inspirational” horticultural communication. Joining the ranks of the likes of J.C. Raulston, Kathleen Brenzel, Rosalind Creasy, Tom Fischer, Doug Tallamy, and Perla Sofia Curbelo-Santiago in receiving this award.
