DO UNTO THOSE DOWNSTREAM: REGENERATIVE THINKING, WITH MARK LEWIS, TRAILHEAD CAPITAL

4 min read

Many of the systems that run our world, let alone garden our world, are built–sometimes intentionally and sometimes inadvertently–to discourage and disincentivize regenerative growing and regenerative thinking.

Mark Lewis is a human who learned from gardening, and ultimately running a 354-acre regenerative organic farm, how to live into his regenerative values. Gardening and regenerative farming also demonstrated to him that if we want these values to really root in our world, we need apply them to some of our larger systems–like the economics of our world.

Mark is co-founder and managing partner of Trailhead Capital a purpose-driven endeavor based in Boulder, Colorado, creating societal, and ecological returns.

Thinking out loud this week...

Hey it’s Jennifer –

I loved Mark Lewis’ opening quote from Wendell Berry – do unto others downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you, and we had such a fabulous monthly communing book club this month exploring together Is A River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane.

Because the two subjects are related by water–and we are related to them through water,–I wanted to share this quote from Is A River Alive?:

“I wish to say plainly and early that this book was written with the rivers who run through its pages, among them the Rio Los Cedros, the Adyar, the Cooum, the Kosasthalaiyar, the Mutehekau, Shipu, the mighty St. Lawrence, and the celar-watered stream who flows unnamed from the spring that rises at Nine Wells Wood, a mile from my house, and who keeps time across the pages that follow. They are my co-authors."

I feel this way about my gardens–all of them across my lifetime. They are my co-authors. Of any program, of any book, of parenting and partnering: the plants and places I have tended and who have tended to me with care have co-authored all of me.

DO you feel this way about your garden? I think you might….

I am so looking forward to our second annual #100daysinPlace together. It checks so many boxes for me: allows me to lean into my place, learn once again into being intentionally observant, to learning, all while leaning into this community of cultivators of place–tending plants in our places with care for ALL the reasons: culture, history, spirit, ecology, community, food, ritual, and the future.

We are kicking off like last year on the seasonal marker day of October 31st, and running through mid-February. Using a daily practice of your choosing – be it drawing, writing, sewing, watching, listening, or learning we will all dive more deeply into our own knowledge of our places together.

An introductory kick off  ZOOM event will take place on Tuesday October 27th.  Dive in with us!!!
