HIGH ELEVATION BALANCING ACT, JENNIFER BOUSSELOT, COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY





At the height of summer, we head to the "Mile-High City" of Denver, Colorado to think more about Cultivating Place at elevation: human-made and natural elevations, in the service of people and their places.


We’re in conversation with Professor Jennifer Bousselot, who leads the Green Roof and Urban Agriculture Program, growing food for people and pollinators, at Colorado State University. This program and its team are dedicated to researching how the world can better integrate climate-appropriate green roofs and solar arrays to improve both habitat and food systems, beautifully. All of the human produce grown in their research sites is donated back to local food pantries.


Dr. Bousselot is motivated by balance–specifically that balance between human and planetary ecological needs. The author and co-author of many titles, including Trees & Shrubs of Colorado and Trees and Shrubs of New Mexico, Jen has also published widely on the power (pun intended) of green roofs and agrivoltaics, a stacking-functions, mixed-use approach, combining solar power and agriculture. And that’s all while introducing students to the mix!

know what that means – Ben’s been talking about it, Abra’s been talking about

it, I’ve been talking about it, and the whole Cultivating Place team has been

planning their hearts out for this moment this year!


The first round of tickets for the Cultivating Place: The Power of Gardener’s Symposium this year in South Bend, IN is now open to Cultivating Place Sustaining Donors!

At this Symposium on September 25th & 26th, we will gather together around a central idea of what it means to be Keystone Species Gardeners, what Cultivating Place WELL means and looks like to each of us.

Speaking of August 1st, this is also the deadline for submitting abstracts for talks to the The Landscaping with Colorado Native Plants Conference planning committee in advance of their 2027 event, which takes place Saturday, February 27, 2027. Preference will be made towards sessions that encourage growth of the native plant movement to new and diverse audiences.


If you have expertise with designing, growing or maintaining native plant landscapes and would like to be considered as a Conference speaker, please submit your ideas in this form. The conference team is looking for engaging speakers that offer information and inspiration that attendees can put into practice.


The deadline for submissions is this Saturday August 1st at 5 pm MST. The planning committee will review and score all proposals and notify selected speakers in early September. Priority will be given to proposals from members of underrepresented groups and to those who have not previously presented at the Landscaping with Colorado Native Plants Conference.
